Three Project Tools That Change What You Can Answer (Part 2 of 3)

Smart strategies. Sharp stories. Sustainability that sticks.

📬 Intro: The Carbon Question

A client asked about mass timber at a schematic design review last month. Standard question. Two years ago, the answer was “we’ll get back to you after we run the model.” Last month, the answer came back before the meeting ended.

Part 1 covered the general tools: voice capture, file scripts, code lookups. Part 2 is about the project itself. Three tools that change what your team can answer in the room.

🌍 Field Notes: Three Tools for the Project

🏗 The Carbon Number at Massing

Autodesk launched Forma Carbon Insights on April 7, free for Revit subscribers. It runs at the schematic massing stage before you open Revit. You input your massing geometry, select structural systems and material options, and it compares embodied carbon across configurations in seconds. No model required, no consultant on hold.

A Stantec team of first-time users tested it on a 20-tower transit-oriented development in Vancouver, starting with a 723,000-ton CO2 baseline. They ran mass timber against concrete across three towers and cut 42,000 tons. That early carbon documentation is also what green construction lenders require before they offer favorable financing rates. The full optimization took 90 minutes.

A carbon number that used to take a week now comes back before the meeting ends.

☀️ The Daylight Analysis, Free

Foster + Partners released Cyclops in April 2025, a free Grasshopper plugin that runs 10,000 times faster on sunlight hour analysis than non-accelerated methods. It covers 17 analysis types including daylight autonomy and sky component, which map directly to LEED v4 Daylight credit documentation. Earlier certification lifts lease conversations.

No license fee. No service contract. It runs inside Rhino/Grasshopper, integrates with existing parametric workflows, and won the CIBSE 2025 Best Digital Innovation award. Within six months of its internal launch at Foster + Partners, 40% of all Rhino users at the firm had incorporated it into active project work.

Foster + Partners built it for their own projects. Then they released it free.

📋 The Submittals That Arrive Wrong

Procore’s Submittal Builder scans the full specification book and generates a submittal register in minutes. Customers report saving 5 to 7 days per project versus building it manually.

Trunk Tools went further. Gilbane deployed TrunkSubmittal across 200-plus projects nationwide. In three months, it reviewed more than 2,000 submittals and cut cycle times by nearly 50%. 72% of incoming packages were non-compliant on first pass. The tool flags them before they reach the architect’s desk, moving substantial completion forward and opening insurance underwriting while terms are still negotiable.

Gilbane ran it on 200 projects. 72% of incoming submittals were marked up before the architect ever opened them.

A MESSAGE FROM BUILDINGPLAQUES.COM

Using buildingplaques.com online Plaque Designer, you can quickly and easily design and order customized LEED recognition plaques that features the details of your specific LEED certified project.

Our architectural grade anodized aluminum signs are available in multiple sizes, and identify the elements of your design that earn LEED certification and acknowledge key project members, all while being less expensive than comparable LEED recognition plaque options.

🏛 Built to Last

Forma Carbon Insights, Cyclops, and TrunkSubmittal each land at a different point in the project. Carbon analysis now happens before the design is set. Daylight runs through it. Submittal review starts when the GC begins buying.

Skema takes the same approach to drawing review and code compliance. Catch the conflict before it becomes a change order.

By role:

📋 LEED consultants: Forma Carbon Insights is free with Revit. Run it at massing and have the number before the client asks.

🏗 Project architects: Cyclops for LEED v4 Daylight credit documentation. Download it this week.

📋 Project managers: Procore Submittal Builder or Trunk Tools. Stop non-compliant packages before they land.

🏢 Principals: Forma answers the what-if-we-switch-materials question in the room. Not the following week.

🧠 TL;DR

Three project workflow tools: carbon analysis at massing, free LEED daylight analysis from Foster + Partners, and AI that flags non-compliant submittals before they reach your desk.

💬 Quote of the Week

“The most expensive problems in this construction are the ones you could have been caught in the pre-construction/modeling phases. Change orders. Missed credits. Submittals that come back wrong. AI does not prevent all of them. It moves the finding to where fixing it costs hours, not weeks.”
— Charlie Cichetti, CEO of Skema and LEED Fellow

🔧TOOLS DOWN

The client asked about mass timber. You opened Forma. The carbon number came back in seconds. You answered in the room.

That used to take a week. Now it takes the meeting.
