📬 Intro: The Sustainability Job Nobody Posted

Something strange is happening in the job market right now.

Companies are cutting sustainability teams. Southwest eliminated its sustainable aviation fuel group. S&P Global reduced its ESG division. Amazon and Zendesk trimmed corporate responsibility headcount. The headlines read like a retreat.

At the same time, workers who have green skills are getting hired at a rate 46% higher than the overall workforce. The disconnect is not a glitch.

The sustainability job you want might not be called a sustainability job.

🔭 What We're Watching

📊 Green skills are spreading into every role. For the first time, more than half of all green-skilled hires in 2025 landed in jobs without a sustainability title: project managers, procurement leads, facility operators, engineers, finance analysts. The skills moved. The job titles didn’t follow. LinkedIn 2025 Green Skills Report

🔌Energy management is the fastest-growing skill in the world right now. Not prompt engineering. Not data science. Energy management grew 17% year over year globally—faster than any other skill category. People who can read a building’s energy systems and make decisions from the data are in acute short supply. LinkedIn 2025 Green Skills Report

👤 41% of the construction workforce is projected to retire by 2031. Average tenure at architecture and engineering firms has dropped from 7 years to under 5 in a single decade. The people who know where real project risk lives are leaving faster than anyone is replacing them. NCCER / Industry Today

🧠 43% of workers want a job that contributes to climate solutions. That number hits 60% among Gen Z. The talent pipeline firms need to hire over the next decade already knows what it wants to work on. LinkedIn September 2025 survey

🏛 Built to Last

Here is the career reality that most people in this industry have not fully internalized yet.

You are sitting on skills the rest of the market is desperately trying to hire.
If you have spent years on LEED projects, you know how to read an energy model, manage a commissioning process, and connect building decisions to measurable outcomes. Those are not just green building skills, they are operational skills that finance teams, data center developers, and infrastructure investors are paying a premium to hire. They just don’t always know what to look for, and you may not know how to describe it to them.

The answer is not to chase a different title. It is to describe your existing work in the language of outcomes. Not “led LEED documentation” but “reduced energy costs 18% on a 200,000 square foot building.” The work is the same. You’ve got to change the framing

The knowledge walking out the door is worth more than anyone is admitting.

Turner Construction brought retired superintendents back for 20-hour weeks on complex projects and saw 85% fewer schedule delays and 60% less rework. The institutional knowledge those people carried does not live in a file. If you are mid-career, you are the bridge between a generation that is retiring and one that is hungry to learn. That is a position most people underestimate badly.

AI fluency plus green skills is the rarest combination in the workforce right now.

The workers gaining the most ground are adding both at the same time. Not overwhelming AI expertise but enough fluency to use these tools to analyze building data, run energy scenarios, and turn output into a recommendation a client can act on. That combination does not exist at scale yet. The people building it now will be hard to replace in five years.

🧠 TL;DR

ESG department jobs are contracting. Green-skilled workers are getting hired faster than almost anyone else. The difference is whether your skills connect to real decisions and measurable outcomes or just to reports. If you work in buildings, you almost certainly have the former. The job you want may already exist. It just may not be posted under the name you expect.

🧰 Action Step:

Take one project from the last two years and write three sentences about it without using the words “sustainability,” “LEED,” or “green.” Describe what changed, what it cost or saved, and who it affected. That is the career story that travels well beyond this industry.

💬 Quote of the Week

“The best mentors in this industry aren't the ones who tell people what to study. They're the ones who walk a younger colleague through a real project and say — here's what I wish someone had told me at month nine.”
— Charlie Cichetti, CEO of Skema and LEED Fellow

🔧TOOLS DOWN

The work is in operations now. In procurement. In project delivery. In every function where someone has to make a decision that touches carbon, energy, or waste. It just doesn't say sustainability in the subject line anymore.
