The Greenest First Day of School in America

📬 INTRO: HOTTEST AUGUST, FIRST BELL
August 2026 tied July 2023 as the hottest month ever measured, and the US summer ran hotter than the 1936 Dust Bowl. In the first week of September, heat closed schools or sent kids home early in 8 states.
The same week, Watertown, Massachusetts cut the ribbon on a high school that makes its own power!
Here’s a rundown on what the first week of school taught us about buildings.
🌍 FIELD NOTES: THE FIRST-WEEK REPORT CARD
🔥 “Little Brick Ovens”
Milwaukee Public Schools closed districtwide on Sept. 2, day two of the school year. Only about a quarter of its classrooms have air conditioning, and the average building is 85 years old. A superintendent in Monticello, Iowa called his 60-year-old buildings “little brick ovens.”
The fix starts in the electrical room. Detroit schools built before the 1970s were wired for 60 to 100 amps, and modern HVAC needs 200 or more.
Pittsburgh priced cooling for its 37 uncooled buildings at up to $552M.
🏫 Watertown’s First Bell
Watertown held its ribbon cutting on Sept. 2, and students started classes Sept. 8. The district calls it the first high school in the country to achieve both net-zero energy and LEED 4.1 Platinum. The $219M building covers 200,000 square feet and holds 720 students.
Rooftop solar with battery storage and a geothermal well field feed all-electric ground-source and air-source heat pumps. Ai3 Architects designed it and Brait Builders built it.
Watertown paid for it without a Proposition 2½ debt exclusion (a voter-approved tax bump).

🎤 The Sophomore Brought the Math
On Sept. 8, Charlotte-Mecklenburg students asked their school board for net zero schools. Sophomore Corinne Staples told the board more rooftop solar could free up $5M to $8M a year “to spend on teachers and fixing up rundown schools instead of utilities.”
Tenth grader Connolly Baxter put it plainer: “We have no future if we don’t have a planet.” The board would first need to adopt an energy action plan.
Somebody put that sophomore on a bond committee!
☀️ The Roof Pays for the AC
Cambria Heights Elementary in western Pennsylvania just added air conditioning. Then it switched on a rooftop array sized at about 215,000 kWh a year, 80% to 90% of the school’s electric load. State grants and federal incentives covered nearly two-thirds of the $6M package, which also replaced the boilers. Rising energy prices cut the payback estimate from 8 or 9 years to about 4.
Generation180 counts more than 7 million K-12 students already attend a solar-powered school.
At a 4-year payback, the array pays for itself before this year’s kindergartners reach fifth grade.

🏛 BUILT TO LAST:
Students slow down and lose accuracy once a classroom passes 73°F, according to a new American Psychological Association report. Put the electrical upgrade on page one of any school retrofit plan, then size solar for the new heat pump load.

🔨 Builders: Budget for asbestos and lead abatement when you open walls in pre-1970s schools.
🏢 Operators: Log classroom temperatures now. Pittsburgh goes remote at 90°F indoors.
