The 7 Brew that Arrived on a Flatbed

A corner lot sits empty on Monday. By Friday a finished coffee stand is on it, wrapped, wired, and pouring energy drinks. No months of framing, no dumpster parade. The building showed up on a flatbed!
I love a good demolition-free story, and quick service restaurants keep supplying them. The buildings are small, identical, and everywhere, which makes the category a perfect lab: prove a green idea once and it repeats hundreds of times a year.

🚚 The Building Arrives Thursday
Last Tuesday a Pennsylvania township approved a 510-square-foot 7 Brew stand that will actually shrink the site’s paved footprint by about 5,000 square feet. The stand itself gets built in a Georgia factory by Frey-Moss Structures, trucked out, and set on its foundation in days. When one landed in Owensboro, Kentucky, install took a single day.
That kit is how rising Arkansas brand 7 Brew went from 321 stands to more than 600 in one calendar year. Checkers ran the same play earlier: four factory modules assembled in three days, about $100,000 cheaper than site-built and 12 weeks faster. America’s fastest-growing chain orders its buildings the way you order the coffee.

☀ The McDonald's That Runs on Sunshine
The global flagship McDonald’s at Disney World opened in 2020 as an 8,000-square-foot test kitchen for building tech: a solar canopy of more than 1,000 panels, photovoltaic glazing, and jalousie windows that open automatically so the dining room skips air conditioning about 65% of the time.
The commissioning data came back better than the pitch: measured over 12 straight months, the all-electric building produced more than 105% of the energy it used, on 35% less energy than the restaurant it replaced. McDonald’s exported the lessons to a net-zero-carbon store in the UK that became the blueprint for 1,400 British locations targeting net-zero standard by 2030.
🔌 BlackRock Wants to Fix Your HVAC
Restaurants burn five to seven times more energy per square foot than other commercial buildings, and institutional money finally noticed. Budderfly, the energy-as-a-service firm serving Subway, Wendy’s, and Wingstop franchisees, expanded its debt facility to $550 million in March, led by BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners.
The model: Budderfly pays 100% of the upfront cost for HVAC, LED, refrigeration, and controls, then shares the savings. Average measured reduction runs 22%, with some sites hitting 30%. One Sonic franchisee put five Long Island stores on the program and cut 36,000 kWh a month, with about $26,000 of upgrades per store. Owner capex and debt was zero.
